654 General Election - 01 May 2023

The 654 General Election was held on 01 May 2023, with campaigning beginning on 17 April 2023. Incumbent Chancellor Charlotte Groves (KWP) did not run for re-election. President Klaus Mikaelson (KWP) did not seek re-election. Mivod Hlaja of the NUP was the only candidate to declare as a candidate for President. Braughn Kyros of the KWP and Jason Corey of the NUP declared as candidates for Chancellor. Chief Justice Martang Eðeltreow retired in 652 and District Court (and temporary high court justice) Ethward Staples lodged his intention to remain midway through the campaign season. This was the first election for a Chief Justice since 630.
This term saw the creation of the Centrist Kodiak Alliance (Previously World FED) party by B. Pandor and his deputy I. von Zeppelin after Mr. Pandor's mysterious disappearance while on holiday in Sjokalade.
The NUP was supported in coalition with the DPPK (previously supportive of the KWP) and the KWP was supported in coalition with the CKA.
The previous term was notable for the struggles with the near total collapse of the advanced economy and an ongoing looming currency crisis while government spending continued to soar. Social projects were a major factor for the term, while power seemed to slowly shift away from the far left towards the centre. The NUP ditching much of its social conservatism in favour of Rhine-ish Capitalism.
The election ran for three days and was certified by the Public Service.

I am grateful. Grateful that the people have chosen me to be their representative. Grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given to improve our world. But most of all, grateful that I am here today, announcing my campaign for President. You have been kind to me, and I have tried my best to give back. Our assembly is a scientist comparing systems. Many inputs, which they compare and pick the best possible. I’ve noticed a trend of filters. Filters placed on the inputs from our very own Presidents. While faint and largely ineffectual, they exist. When only one input is allowed to enter unchanged, the scientists will come to the wrong conclusion. Despite passionately fighting for what I know is right, I will not let my beliefs intervene in fair moderation. Unfair judgement in the Assembly is a bipartisan issue and I will not let party lines conserve it. In addition to fair and unbiased moderation, I pledge to you my effectiveness. Every proposal will be queued within 12 hours. Every vote archived in the same period. Every request for help answered quickly and kindly. As your President, I will also assist newer members in the creation of bills, despite party allegiance. I am grateful for your consideration, and hopeful for your vote.
Chief Justice
Ethward Staples
Ethward Staples announced his candidacy for the office of Chief Justice today on national radio. As the last aide justice to serve under long-standing Chief Justice Martang B. Etheltreow, Staples has been serving as the acting Chief Justice of Kodiak for the past year. He brings to the bench 10 years of national level legal work, extensive study in the history of the Kodiak Republic, and good old-fashioned Mengtianese stubborn commitment to the inexorable discovery of the truth no matter the political implications. Before his appointment to the courts of law, he was a member of the Kodiak Solidarity Party, a relatively minor political organization found chiefly in the province of Mengtian, which is known most particularly for its pro-local, pro-small-business, pro-family, and pro-life values. In the social sphere, Staples is a widower with two children currently studying music and religion, respectively, at the prestigious University of Kodiak (UK) in Rykkburg. In his radio interview this morning, Ethward joked "my late wife never wanted to move to Rykkburg, but since her untimely passing it seems all my roads lead there."
Although the office of chief justice is one that is held until voluntary retirement or special impeachment, it is a regular elected position, when vacant, along with the other government offices of Kodiak during the regular election cycle.

Good evening Kodiak,
Today I address not just my dear constituents in Graz, but also all of the hardworking peoples of our great nation. I first wish to sincerely thank you for your resilience in these tough times. Sometimes I know it may feel as though nothing will ever get better - you will keep living your monotonous life in a dying economy and struggle through your days. Despite this feeling hanging over all Kodiak people, I can wholeheartedly assure you that myself and my colleagues in the National Unity Party are doing our best to remedy this crisis. But it is a daunting task before us. And with the inefficient, lumbering spider web of economic “reforms” and bureaucracy created by previous administrations, this struggle from the halls of the General Assembly to the streets of our great cities has been made no easier. Alas, the NUP has a gameplan, one which we hope will be the cure to our economic woes and lack of prosperity not found in any nook and cranny of our nation.
Firstly, we will work to support the small businesses of Kodiak - from tech startups to your ma and pa’s bakery down the street. These small businesses, although seemingly insignificant on their own, single handedly hold up our economy in these times of woe. We plan to lend these businesses a helping hand any way we can, be it grants, subsidies, tax cuts, anything we can afford to provide!
Secondly, we will work to become a player in the greater global stage. We will strengthen alliances with the URA and attempt to draw the most skilled workers from every corner of the globe to provide a much needed jumpstart to our economy.
Third, we will work to support our tech sectors and scientific research sectors which are the driving force for so much innovation in our great nation. Though stifled by the policies of past administrations, we will support their work in any way we can, providing whatever necessary to keep the never ending process of innovation, another key component of any healthy economy, moving forward.
Finally, we will work to support the culture of our great nation. Despite the constant process of innovation and progress, we will not forget our culture, our past, and what it means to be a Kodiaker. We will not forget the great artists and authors and heroes of times long past - we will relish in our past in order to provide the inspiration to keep us moving forward.
With this plan of action, there is only one more component needed to put it in action. You. You, the people, are the only ones who can push our nation through these trying times. I am merely your tool. A tool that, if elected to the office of chancellor of the Kodiak republic, can be wielded in the ways which I have described and more to turn the monotony of days and the struggle of daily life into a golden age, an age of prosperity, creativity, and innovation.
A man once said to me in a bar: “We choose to do things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” That, my friends, is not true. We choose to do things because they are easy. We do hard things because it is necessary. Getting out of our current situation is not something we choose to do - it is a necessity. It is a necessity because we can not do easy things until the hard is done. So, in the future, if you want to choose to do something, go to space, explore the deepest depths of the ocean, then you need to act here. That is why I implore you to elect myself to the chancellery. I implore you to elect me, because, one day, maybe you can choose to do something easy.

Good day, my fellow Kodiakers.
I am a new member amongst the ranks of the prestigious General Assembly. I am not as familiar to all of you as I might like to be. Unfortunately, I have had little time to remedy that situation. However, tonight, I am asking for your support of my candidacy for Chancellor of the General Assembly of Kodiak. As a member of the Kodiak Workers Party, many of you might wonder what my goals in this coming term are. There is but one goal: continue improving and supporting our growing economy. As some have pointed out, that statement might stand at odds with the KWP’s stated goals. I can assure you, however, that we are more than capable of protecting the rights of workers while supporting the growing economy. In fact, our workers are our economy. We cannot work to support one without working to support the other.
I have formulated a number of specific goals that I would like to achieve during my term to support our economy and protect the workers of Kodiak. Firstly, I will encourage the growth of unions and their ability to negotiate with companies for better working conditions and the use of more efficient tools and processes, as well as tying tax credits to offering benefits and other such incentives. Secondly, I will encourage startups, small businesses, and proprietorships through tax reductions and minor subsidies, as well as protections against unfair vulturism and monopolization from large corporations. These businesses, primarily run by the everyday class of Kodiakers, must be protected to ensure a healthy and diverse economy. Finally, I will encourage our international industry by lowering tariffs on exported goods, allowing for Kodiaker industries to increase international trade without suffering consequences of overbearing taxation. Local businesses need to gain priority over international, non-Kodiak mega-corporations. Both have a place in our economy, and I will strive to find the balance between them. I look forward to partnering with our international partners in achieving this project.
This is not an exhaustive list, but simply the start of a vibrant comeback for the economic situation of Kodiak. Not only will my cabinet and I be committed to the rebuilding of our economy, but also to expanding it beyond expectations. I do not expect only my fellow members within the KWP to stand behind me, but also my friends in the CKA, the DPPK, and even the NUP to stand up against our economic troubles. To achieve this initiative, I will form a pan-partisan committee on the state of our economy, with representatives from each party. It shall discuss the current economic situation, the best solutions, and ways in which we will have to compromise and support one another in the defeat of our economic woes. Depression and recession are not partisan enemies; they cannot be defeated by partisan means.
I am once again asking for your support in my campaign as Chancellor of Kodiak. I look forward to serving you in that role. I am available for any questions or concerns members would like to address with me. My office door is always open.
