The Kodiak Republic Mock Government Roleplay
In Kodiak, we run a mock government roleplay where the players are politicians in the Kodiak General Assembly with the power to debate and legislate, and govern the Kodiak Republic. In turn, players can see the effects of their decisions and initiatives on meaningful changes, for example (but not limited to): policies on trains, science, education, healthcare, economy, and even international relations. You have the power to make change in our simulated world!
For information about The Kodiak Republic in the context of the mock government roleplay, see the main article: The Kodiak Republic.
If you have any questions not answered here, please feel free to ask us in our discord server!
The Simulation
The Kodiak Republic's government decisions are evaluated against a custom mod of the political simulation game Democracy 4. The policies in the policy review pages are pulled directly from the D4 simulated policies. These policies are a reference only and give a good idea of what players can affect with their legislative proposals or their actions in executive government. Legislation is not limited to these policies, and the Game Master / Mock Gov Admin will attempt to replicate policies in the simulation as much as possible where reasonable. Kodiak Assembly Members are expected to use these reviews as guides to the limits of the simulation, but the contents of a proposed law can be as interesting as the role-player wants it to be, so long as it includes the minimum information required to enact it such as proposed quarterly or annual expenditures budgeted for the proposal.
However when in doubt or just have a question about the simulation or setting - feel free to ask in the #lobby or #meta sections of the discord server.
The players: Roleplay
Players are considered to be the elected representatives of a constituency in the Kodiak Republic. How deep you wish your role play to be is totally on you. If you wish to use a full fictional name, great. If you just want to be "Batavia", also fine. You can optionally create a wikipedia page to detail your character's backstory and lore.
Constituencies represent roughly 300,000 to 700,000 people, and there are currently 200 seats in the General Assembly for elected representatives. Kodiak is divided up into 11 provinces which will have many constituencies within. More information can be found on The Kodiak Republic Provinces and Constituencies section.
You are free to name your own constituency, as well as define roughly its location. It is a good idea to add your name and constituency to the following page for record purposes: Constituencies of the Kodiak General Assembly. Note that provincial capitals will have multiple constituencies due to population, but you are free to design a constituency outside the main capitals, which many players do.
Players who are members of the Kodiak Republic via NationStates may like to use the name of their nation in the TKR Region as inspiration for their constituency name. It's up to you.
The General Assembly
As a politician, in Kodiak called MGAs or 'Member of the General Assembly', your role is to ensure your character's opinions and the voices of your constituency are heard through debate. Debate is crucial to ensure that legislation that passes has been considered thoroughly, and its effects properly examined for the good of Kodiak. Subsequently, you have the power to vote to pass or reject legislation. All votes are anonymous.
Furthermore, MGAs can propose legislation to be debated on the floor. Such legislation is submitted to the President who leads the General Assembly, moderates debate, and manages the law code. The President is an elected position, alongside the Chancellor per the Constitution of the Seventh Republic of Kodiak. If you would like a look at past legislation for inspiration or ideas on how to structure yours, you may find all active laws in Kodiak Law Code, Proposed Laws for legislation soon to or already in debate, as well as examine what laws were passed during a Government's three year term in the Legislative Archive. An elected Chancellor (from amongst the players) will also lead a cabinet, which will also be hard at work at producing legislation aligned with their Government's goals.
Elections
As per the constitution we have two elected positions:
- The Chancellor who leads the executive government and forms a cabinet of ministers.
- The President who leads the General Assembly.
The roles are defined in the Constitution.
Elections occur every 3 (in-game) years, which works out to be roughly every 3 months in real time.
There will be a two week (real-time) campaign period where candidates from political parties or independent candidates may declare their intention to run for Chancellor or President. All players are then able to vote for the candidate that they support. Once elected, the Chancellor will need to form a cabinet who will represent the executive Government and work towards their government's agenda. As an MGA you are, like any other real world government, free to cooperate with or work against the government depending on your beliefs or agreement with the government.
As an MGA you are free to remain independent or join a political party. If you are able to band together with at least two other like-minded players, perhaps you will start your own party one day?
Time
Time in Kodiak is customised such that year 1 begins Monday of the first week that Max Barry, creator of NationStates, was born. A year is four real life weeks, each week roughly equivalent to a quarter year.
This means that the three year term of a government is in fact 12 real weeks in length, Monday to Sunday.

Nationstates
Nationstates (NS) was where Kodiak was originally born in 2008. You may have even found us there!
As an NS region, we also offer nation based roleplay which typically takes place on the regional RMB. You can find more organised discussion in our discord server in the nationstates sections of the server. If you are interested in general NS events, nation roleplay, World Assembly votes, and international relations throughout Nationstates, then you're welcome to join us in that endeavour!
