651 General Election - 06 Feb 2023

From The Kodiak Republic Wiki

The 651 General Election was held on 06 February 2023, with campaigning beginning on 24 January 2023. Incumbent Chancellor John Edwards (KWP) did not feel he had the energy to complete a second term and did not run for re-election. President Patrick Barber (KWP) did not seek re-election. Klaus Mikaelson of the KWP was the only candidate to declare as a candidate for President. Charlotte Groves of the KWP and Simon Kalimeno of the NUP declared as candidates for Chancellor. Chief Justice Martang EΓ°eltreow lodged his intention to remain midway through the campaign season.

The previous term was notable in the near total domination of the assembly by the KWP and leftist-sympathetic members. While a pro-business tax bill was barely passed midway through the term, social spending was a major topic for the entire term.

The election ran for three days and was certified by the Public Service.

The election was run through the EasyPoll Software on Discord and the questions put were:

Candidate Declarations

President

Klaus Mikaelson (KWP)
Citizens of Kodiak,

Today I am pleased to announce my candidacy for the position of President in the Kodiak Republic. I am immeasurably thankful to President Barber for his hard work and dedication, but he has more than earned some time away from the position.

As the Deputy President, I have been learning the system both here on Discord and on our Wiki, and I believe that I can continue the work of our outgoing President in running and managing the Assembly in a fair way.

I have held similar positions more times than I can count, both in other regions, and even here in Kodiak a number of years ago. I was a member of Kodiak in the old days, and I have to say that in all of the regions that I have been a part of in my 17 years or so in NS, Kodiak is one of only two places that I could honestly think of as a NS home, and I will forever be grateful for that. This region means a lot to me, for what it used to be and for what it is now, and I promise you that if elected, I will not let you, or this region down.

Chancellor

Charlotte Groves (KWP)
Kodiak,

Today I announce my candidacy for Chancellor. As a Kodiak native, I love our nation and believe that a better future awaits us. I speak of a future where our Government takes care of those that need it, and helps all Kodiakers prosper. A Kodiak that is fairer. A Kodiak where success can be found by anyone that dares to seek it.

Throughout my time as both a member of the Kodiak Workers’ Party and in various policy-making Government roles - including recently as Minister for Education and Health, I have always sought to ensure that every program run by our Government aims to give people a fair go, the opportunity needed to get to where they need to be.

Last term, we produced some of the largest education reforms in Kodiak history aimed at just that - giving all Kodiaker’s a fair go, giving all Kodiakers’ the platform to leap into a better future no matter who they are, no matter their background, and no matter their wealth. I am truly glad that we as a nation collectively said yes to a better future, yes to equality, and yes to our people being given a fair go.

Should I be elected, I seek to continue to build for the future. I seek to collaborate where possible across party lines to do the right thing. I will defend our principles and leave no citizen behind because every single person in Kodiak deserves a brighter future. My history speaks for itself, with multiple examples of collaborating with others, regardless of party allegiance, to build policy. To me - the right thing should transcend politics, our people deserve that much.

My announcement is accompanied by a highlight and short summary of key policy points that I and my prospective cabinet believe are important for building an economically strong Kodiak, a just and fairer Kodiak, a Kodiak that cares for her citizens, and a Kodiak that aims for better simply because it is the right thing to do. I also believe that a government should serve its people and the best way to do this is to ensure our people are heard by avoiding internal party bias - I can promise that a vote for me will not simply be a vote for a KWP-filled cabinet. Throughout the campaign period, I will be speaking more about these topics, and I look forward to engaging with all our citizens on topics that are important to them.

Our work is not done, indeed there is a lot of ambition and work needed to achieve what I and my cabinet will aim for. I say to that - I would rather be ambitious for the betterment of Kodiak, than not try hard enough. So I say to you - vote for me, for a better future for all Kodiakers.

Thank you Kodiak and have a great week!

Charlotte Groves, Chancellor Candidate

Simon Kalimeno (NUP) Citizens of Kodiak, members of the assembly,

I stand before you today not as a politician, but as a citizen of our wonderful nation. A citizen who faces the same adversity you all do today. A citizen who wishes to see Kodiak triumph through that hardship and adversity, and to thrive like never before.

Today, our nation is faced by many hardships; some affect all, some not many. Regardless of what that adversity is, who is affected by it, and who or what causes it, I will guide you through it… as chancellor of Kodiak. I will ensure that every Kodiaker has the right to prosper, without facing pushback from the government or from corporations, from each other or from foreign bodies. That is the only way to build a better future. To build a better Kodiak.

Although my background as a lawmaker to date may not be extensive by any means, I myself always find that with every problem, fresh eyes never hurt a good effort. That is what myself and the rest of the National Unity Party plan to do; bring some fresh eyes to the adversity that plagues Kodiak today.

Specifically, we wish to once again make our nation’s military strong, and most importantly, modern, in order to deter attempts at undermining our sovereignty. We wish to aid everyday Kodiakers and their businesses in their economic development and innovation. We wish to support our veterans of recent conflicts, many of which have gone under appreciated. We wish to restore order to Kodiak to ensure that regular Kodiakers do not fear living their daily lives. We wish to maintain a strong culture and tradition within our nation. However, these dreams of a revitalized Kodiak do not simply happen on their own; if I were to be elected to the chancellory, these wishes will not simply be a dream anymore.

If you just step into that poll booth and fill out the right box, they can become reality, and so much more.

Thank you everyone, have a good night.
